Alert! Potential Widespread Delays for Container Handling at Chittagong Port

2026-04-30

Heavy persistent rainfall has triggered severe flooding across multiple regions in Bangladesh. The two core cities of Dhaka and Chittagong are both affected, with swollen rivers and urban waterlogging.

According to Reuters, upstream water from India combined with local heavy rain has caused river levels in the northeast to rise sharply. Major roads in Dhaka and Chittagong are severely waterlogged, traffic nearly paralyzed, and drainage systems under immense pressure. More concerning is that port operations at Chittagong may already be experiencing real disruption.

Although port authorities have not yet issued an official suspension notice, heavy rain and standing water are likely to significantly slow down container handling, truck gate movements, and barge berthing operations. Chittagong Port is already notorious for congestion, and any added uncertainty will inevitably translate into delays and demurrage charges.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a warning that heavy rainfall will continue in the coming days, river levels may rise further, and low-lying areas face more serious threats.

For cargo already en route or planned for shipment to Chittagong, it is advisable to proactively contact local agents to confirm the latest operational status at the port – especially for reefer containers and time-sensitive goods.

Keep an eye on potential contingency notices from shipping lines, including alternative port calls to Mongla or early document cut-offs.

The rainy season has always been a vulnerable period for logistics in Bangladesh. This year’s floods have come early and with greater intensity, so it is recommended to build buffer time into bookings for the next two weeks.

Floodwaters will not recede overnight, and the ripple effects on the supply chain often only truly begin after the rain stops.
